Favorite thing about Specialized:

My Specialized aero gloves and that cool, aero, faired top-cap on my S-Works Venge. Nothing says ‘breakaway’ like a guy wearing aero gloves and riding a bike with a faired headset — it’s the little things that count.

Favorite way to eat Cal Giant berries:

I prefer to eat them at our Director’s house parties. I find that fresh, raw Cal Giant berries pair very nicely with many of his expensive wines. Getting the wine out of his cellar without him noticing is part of the fun.

What kind of race is your specialty?

I specialize in anything lacking hills. The more corners on a crit course, the better. Honestly, I’d say coasting and braking are some of my specialties as well.

Do you race mountain bikes or cyclocross?

One of my hobbies is getting beaten by the Cal Giant ‘cross team all winter long. My metric for a successful ‘cross race is whether or not I get lapped by them.

Do you listen to the same kind of music when warming-up for a TT vs a crit vs a road race? What kind is it?

I feel like most people listen to techno or some wacky dubstep before a bike race; however, I prefer the soothing tones of James Taylor for any kind of race. There’s no reason for your mind to be all angsty when you’re suffering, you know? For a bit of pizzazz, I throw some Katy Perry in the mix, but that’s only on special occasions.

Would you choose a romantic dinner with your girlfriend or Go-Kart racing?

Are there any girls out there interested in being my girlfriend AND racing Go-karts? Call me.

Sports car or motorcycle? What kind?

My dad owns a pretty awesome van. It was the kind of van you’d paint “Free Candy” on if you were creepy and had a big scraggly beard. That van was my vehicle in college, and we used to fit 12 bikes and 6 bike racers into the behemoth for race weekends. Why would you want a sports car when you can have a Free Candy Van like that?

Can you ride a wheelie or do a tabletop?

Oooofssh…I’m lucky if I can get on my bike and get clipped in most days. Staying upright while rolling forward gets kinda dicey. Tricks? No way.

Does anyone else in your family race bikes?

I tried to put my little sister on my bikes when I was getting into the sport. I assumed that, since we have the same genes, she would pick it up pretty quickly. Well…she instantly crashed my bike into a prickly bush at speed, and hasn’t touched one since. Nor has she spoken to me.

So, the answer is no.

Other than cycling, what is your favorite sport?

NASCAR. What else is there?
